In the present moment, we can recognize our own negativity. I am grateful to realize I probably don’t have much of latent negativity. Without this awareness, I was en route to self-inflicted background static which would have kept me away from my sunshine. The awareness of this acting out is what I am grateful for.

This feeding of latent negativity eventually turned into background static. My sunshine, I realized was not evolved and conscious enough to not let unhappiness around me not affect me. Adults can be an unhappy, stressed bunch. I suppose I had not developed the calluses growing up to deal with negative energy around me. I always took pride and boasted (ego) that I am a person with a generally positive outlook on life. The negativity in our lives starts defining us. We attach to this identity of grief, hatred, or resentment. Once this dormant negativity is fed, the ego starts identifying with it and it gives one a sense of false self. This part explains to me why it is easy to preach hatred and negativity and get humans to follow you. I have wondered, even before I read the book, why I feel a certain way in the presence of some people and why certain people have reacted to me in a distant or negative way. Unhappiness triggers and feeds latent negativity in others unless they are immune - highly conscious beings.

This awareness presents the potential for us to mute out the noise. In the present moment, we can recognize the background static. A background static that I did not want to acknowledge or a noise I had gotten used to eventually triggered me to snap.Įckhart Tolle advises it is pointless to dig into your past but I took a walk down memory lane and I realized that me snapping or being irritated had nothing to do with the situation or person. I realized every time I snapped at a situation or a person, it was 9 times out of 10 not because of the situation. It is a thought pattern that we unconsciously carry with us all the time.īackground static was my biggest aha moment reading the book. However, the moment the noise stops we feel a sense of relief.īackground static is a form of unconsciousness at our end. We get used to the noise while going about our daily chores in the house, not bothered about the noise. It is like the sound of the dryer, the dishwasher, or the exhaust.
